A PICTURE OF SOUTHAMPTON - THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY!
On Sunday 26th June 2005, I ventured into Southampton City Centre armed with my trusty digital camera. As a keen photographer and architecture enthusiast, I decided to take some photos showing the REAL Southampton, not the Southampton seen in stock images and guide books. I've searched the web for this type of photo of Southampton and haven't been able to find any and as the old saying goes, if you want something done, do it yourself! Also, I hope this will be an important pictorial record in the future so that people can look back and see what Southampton was like in the year 2005. The urban landscape is constantly changing and buildings are being lost all the time. I have particularly focused here on buildings that are likely to be gone in ten years time, some sooner than that judging by the current rate that post war architecture is being destroyed at.
So this collection of photos ain't all pretty pictures of lush parks, ancient buildings and other tourist attractions - photos of those already exist!
I have divided this feature into eight distinctive sections, each one representing a different area of the city centre:
Section A - Central Station, Commercial Road and the Civic Centre
Section B - Town Quay, Mayflower Park, Marlands (W)
Section C - The old town, West Quay and High Street
Section E - East Street and Queensway
Section F - London Road and North city centre
Section H - Shirley - UPDATED 12 JULY
Section I - Chilworth and Lords Wood - NEW 12 JULY
Section J - Townhill Park, Bitterne and Northam - NEW 13 JULY
Section K - Millbrook, Redbridge, Nursling and Lordshill- NEW 19 JULY
