Another city centre pub closes

It’s been closed for a while now but when going past the pub on the corner of Onslow Road and St Mary’s Road (which has had many names in recent years including Shotz, Pure, H2O and the Oliver Goldsmith) yesterday, I noticed it has now been converted to a convenience store.

This seems to be a popular trend at the moment, with The Eagle and The Winning Post having already been converted to shops and rumours about The Maybush and The Woodman becoming shops as well.

It is always sad when a pub closes but I would rather the buildings, which are often of local historic interest and important landmarks for navigation, were kept and converted instead of being destroyed to make way for characterless new flats. Sadly, we’ve lost the Oddfellows Arms, the Star and Garter, the Elephant and Castle and many other pubs in that way.
