  1. The first Digital Mapping production section was started in May 1972. Prior to that”Automated Cartography” was part of the Research and Development department and was used to develop the digital process and for testing a succession of digitising work stations from various manufacturers.
    Ferranti were the successful supplier and in May 1972 supplied the first six work tables you see in this picture CDE0017. The table top was a Bendix table containing a mesh of wires in a grid and the circular cursor moved across the grid to record the “X” and “y” co-ordinates which were button recorded on the quarter inch magnetic tape.
