A lift Otis motor-generator set. Lift motors were not easy to run directly off AC in those days so the mains AC needed to be converted to DC to feed the motor. This was achieved by connecting the shaft of an AC motor directly to the shaft of a DC generator. It doesn’t sound particularly efficient but it did the job. 24 Sep 2011
