Caption: W301 - box files containing important boundaries information about counties.
Description: W301 - box files (usually described as County Files) that were used to store Statutory Instruments and ancillary information regarding the updating of the boundary records for these SIs. Starting in 1972 there were one or more files for each of the Principal areas in England, Wales and Scotland eg Hampshire County, Dumfries and Galloway Region, Gwynedd County. Each file contained an index of SI that affected the area and a sub-file for each entry. These sub-files contained the order and a history sheet which acted as a check list showing the documents to be updated with signatures for both the updates and the examination. The folder would also contain a Working Diagram roughly showing all the changes to boundaries alignments and names caused by the order, (an electronic version of the working diagram is still produced for each order). The County files were very labour intensive and gradually were superseded by electronic documents, until they fell out of use in the early 2000s. So part of the clearing out process prior to OS move from Maybush was to catalogue these files and their contents before releasing to form part of the National Archive. The information within the files is still often used for reference so when the decision was made to stop any new entries the contents of all the files was scanned and now this information forms part of the boundaries Archive. So although the files are gone, their legacy is still in day to day use.
